Valentines Crochet Coasters

Where does the Valentines Day come from?

There has been many myths and stories on why and how people have started to celebrate Valentines Day. One story that is most common is about St. Valentine, the priest of Rome, who lived back in the 3rd century. Claudius II was the Emperor at the time, and he had forbid to marry altogether! The goal was to get as many men as possible to protect the Empire from foreign aggression and internal discord. The Emperor had thought that married men were more emotionally connected to their spouses and families, thus cannot be good soldiers!

Here is where the St. Valentine comes in. He had seen the pain in people and decided to start marrying them in secret. However, once the Emperor has heard about the secret weddings he arrested Valentine with a death sentence to be carried out on the 14th of February in AD 269. After some time had passed Valentine was declared a Saint and 14th of February was declared as the day of the lovers.

My first ever memory of knitting comes from my Mum. She was the one who taught me how to hold needles, hooks and knot my first loops into a thread. My first creation was a knitted scarf, which made me so proud, because I have done it all myself! After a while, simple knits became a bit boring, so I started looking at more difficult patterns, loops and forms. It is mesmerising to see a simple ball of thread becoming full of potential and use. As of now, I have knitted tonnes of knits, hats, scarves, socks, dresses, napkins, table cloths, bags, toys and many more items used by friends, family and my kids.

Valentines day with JcCraft!

Valentines Day is all about the hearts ♥️ ! It could be chocolate, biscuits, postcards or even pillows! Hearts are all around us during the February month.

For the upcoming Valentines Day I have prepped up a little video on how to crochet your own heart shaped coaster! It is fairly easy to make, and does not require expert level of crochet nor time. All you will need is some thread – you can use any that you have on hand, a crochet hook – the size depends on your thickness of the thread and scissors. Put on your favourite love songs and let’s make a coaster for your loved ones!

Schematics of the heart shaped coaster:

Step 1

We will start from a granny square crochet. We will need 2 rows. (Check out my video on Granny Square here if you are not familiar with the technique)

Step 2

We will start forming the heart on the 3rd row. We will shape the heart with treble crochet and chain stitches.

Step 3

The 4th and the 5th rows are done with a simple double crochet stitches. We will round the heart by increasing the number of columns.

You can also view my video below to see the whole walkthrough of the process:

Now all you need to do is make another one and grab your loved one for a cuppa!

If you have any questions, simply drop us a message and we will be more than happy to help!
